JOURNAL:The JALT CALL Journal( 2005) Vol. 1, No. 1, pp. 12-24

A.AUTHOR’S NAME AND BACKGROUND:
Kathleen Pinkman,
English Language Instructor,
Kwansei Gakuin University,
Japan.

B.The aims of the research:
The study was implemented in a Pre-Advanced English class at Kwansei Gakuin University (KGU) in Japan. The main purpose of this study is to examine the effectiveness of incorporating blogs in the foreign language classroom. Another aim is to assist foreign language professionals interested in encouraging learner independence in their own learners by using blogs as a means of communication to improve their language and communication skills. It is also aimed to motivate the students to practice language skills and communicate with others effectively.

The methodology:
This chapter summarizes the appropriate research design and method used to conduct the study. The relevant of this chapter is to find out whether blog is effective in encouraging self independent among students. It also discuss on how the data is collected as well as data analysis method for further improving the findings. The study was divided into two parts which are Pre-Project and Post-Project. The methods for this study were both qualitative and quantitative methods. The quantitative method was conducted by providing the respondents a set of questionnaires. Meanwhile, the qualitative method was conducted by interviewing the respondents. During the interview session, students were asked to reflect their opinion about the blogs project based on lesson that they have learned in class. Some of the respondents were asked to volunteer to be interviewed by the researcher during the Post–Project.

The subject/sample:
The project involved only 15 respondents. All of them were the holder of TOEFL score of 475 and they were students from the departments of Humanities, So¬ciology, Economics, Business, and Law. They were studying in their second, third, and fourth years at Kwansei Gakuin University,Japan(KGU).

The findings of the research:
Most of the respondents claimed that they were really enjoyed with the project. Most of the respondents claimed that they have learnt a lot through blogging and they were enjoyed with the method of the study. As blogging involved with writing activity, most of them claimed that blogging has helped them to improve their writing skills, their skils in communicating and, it motivated them to to practice language skills and communicate with others effectively. Yet, there were a few problems remarked by some of themwhere as they had to struggle to write in English due to time constraints.

C. My Personal Reaction:

Based on my previous experience, I think blogging is very beneficial for my learning process. A few years ago, I have been in a class that used blogs in sharing the information or notes of between my classmates( Creative writing). I find it interesting and I become more participative in the discussion as I need to post my opinion regarding the task given by my lecturer. In fact, I also noticed that I have gained more information during our sharing session in our forum which is guided by our lecturer. Therefore, I believe that blogging is better than just being a passive listener as usually happens in actual classroom. In fact, if we can offer a variety ways of learning for students, it can positively influence our students to be more creative and innovative. This is in turn will help to produce independent students who are able take their own responsibility in learning.

There are a few shortcomings during the implementation of this research. One of the shortcomings is the measurement of effectiveness of the sample. The scope of the study is too small where as consists of only 15 respondents. Besides, this study requires a lot of time as it can only be done during outside learning sessions. As a result, the efficiency of this method might be invalid in other circumstances. Thus, for the next research, the number of respondents should be added in order to gain a better and consistent result.
I think, it is a good step to expose young learners to another method of writing which is blog. I believe that most of them are familiar with blogging.By incorporating the use of technology (blogging), it will benefit both teachers and students in many ways. For instance, it helps teachers to monitor their students’ progress easily and share the information with all the students through blogs. As a matter of fact, it becomes more inviting and interesting with the support of great images, sound and video. Furthermore, the use of blog has become as one way of interaction from all over the world. Hence, it is a good method to improve student’s capability in language by allowing them to express their thoughts and ideas through blogs.
